Redskins and Wizards Succeed In Spite Of Adversity

Misunderestimated Again is back after a blogging hiatus.

The blogging hiatus was due to a number of factors, but the state of Washington sports was certainly one of them. We’ve spent much of our time covering the Redskins and Wizards and since our last blog post, both the Redskins and Wizards have had to deal with complete catastrophes.

The Wizards lost Gilbert Arenas to a recurrence of his knee injury, a seemingly minor knee injury that will now have seriously tainted two seasons during the prime of his career. The Wizards, whom ESPN’s John Hollinger predicted would win 33 games WITH Gilbert Arenas, were left for dead. And oh how I wish that was just a bad cliche.

The murder of Sean Taylor really rocked the D.C. sports scene. With the legendary Joe Gibbs’ coaching acumen in question during a 4 game losing streak, it was perhaps the lowest point in the history of the franchise.

It would be difficult to script a more disastrous scenario for a city.

But things are looking up to say the least.

The Wizards are more than holding their own without Gilbert Arenas (and Antonio Daniels,. And Oleksiy Pecherov. And Etan Thomas) and the Redskins and Joe Gibbs are on the verge of something special.

I’ll address both situations in more detail in posts to come, but both franchises have been shining examples of success in the face of considerable adversity.
